Provincia di Vicenza - Regione Veneto

Cenni Storici

English Version

The municipality's origins can be found in the context of the foundation of nearby Vicenza, that was inhabited already in prehistoric times; the present municipal territory of Isola was frequented as of Roman times, and is crossed by two important roads connecting Vicenza and Schio.
Man's presence in Isola is attested by numerous archaeological finds of great interest discovered the territory: remains of ceramics and objects for daily-use referable to the Iron Age; the famous stone slab of Isola Vicentina (now preserved in the Archaeological Nature Museum in Vicenza), bearing inscriptions in the old Veneto language; the tombstone of Senator and Tribune Marco Salonio, in charge of the census during Claudius's rule, the Lombard tombs found at Dueville, confirming the report on the foundation by the Lombard lord Anselmo of two chapels between Motta and Castelnovo (respectively dedicated to Saint Michael and Saint John the Baptist)...
Medieval documents refer to Isola as an Episcopal possession, later a fief of noble families.
The presence of ruins of fortifications stresses the strategic importance the whole area had throughout the Middle Ages: Isola's destination only changed in the fifteenth century, when the Veneto countryside and the entire area of Vicenza became part of the great dominion of the Republic of Venice.
The long centuries of peace guaranteed by the Serenissama, interrupted only by the dramatic episode of the invasion and plundering by soldiers of the Cambrai League, during the early sixteenth century, concluded dramatically at the end of the eighteenth century, with the arrival of Napoleon.
The French, however, did not succeed in creating a stable and lasting government, and after various vicissitudes were replaced by the Austrians.
By now times had changed and the population demanded a national government: this desire was finally fulfilled in 1866, when the entire Veneto region was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Deutsche Fassung
